Johnnie Walker joins us at Le Manoir for another wonderful evening as he looks back on his career. With a deep love of music and a reputation for championing new artists, Johnnie made his name in the 1960s on pirate radio ship Radio Caroline – recently fictionalised in the movie The Boat that Rocked. Johnnie’s show was essential listening for the Caroline audience – of over 20 million at its peak.
Johnnie joined Radio 1 in 1969, and introduced his audience to a host of ‘new names’ such as Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Steely Dan and Lou Reed. Listeners will remember features such as Pop the Question.
He made the front pages when he described the Bay City Rollers as ‘musical garbage’. His outspoken views led to his leaving Radio 1. He moved to California, recording a weekly show for Radio Luxembourg. In the 1980s he returned to the UK and to Radio 1 to present the Stereo Sequence. He then hosted the Drivetime show on Radio 2 until 2006. He now presents his Radio 2 Sunday show Sounds of the Seventies. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 2006 New Year’s Honours List.
A hugely popular evening when Johnnie last joined us, this is an unforgettable trip down memory lane.
